PIA (Pensions and Insurance Authority)

The Pensions and Insurance Authority (PIA) is the Zambian regulator that licenses and supervises insurers, intermediaries and pension schemes.

PIA (Pensions and Insurance Authority) explained

The PIA is a statutory body in Zambia responsible for regulating the insurance and pensions industries. For insurance, it operates under the Insurance Act No. 38 of 2021. It licenses insurers, brokers and agents, sets prudential and conduct requirements, and receives the returns insurers must file.

A life insurer in Zambia must hold a PIA licence to carry on long-term insurance business, and must keep the regulator informed through periodic reporting. The detailed requirements are set out in the Act, its regulations and PIA guidelines, which insurers should consult directly.

Why it matters in life insurance

Every Zambian life insurer answers to the PIA, so regulatory reporting, licensing conditions and audit trails are operational necessities rather than optional extras. Ontech LifeI ERP produces reports structured for PIA returns from live policy, premium and claims data.
